Field Notes from Ukraine, 2014
From February to September 2014, I closely followed the most critical stages of the Ukrainian conflict: from the Maidan uprising and Yanukovych’s flight, to the annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of war in Donbass.
In Kyiv, I documented the final days of the revolution under sniper fire on Instytutska Street.
Then in Crimea, I worked within Tatar communities during the forced referendum, amidst silenced voices and the echo of past deportations. In the following months, I moved to Donbass — between Donetsk and surrounding towns — where I witnessed the rise of separatist republics, empty polling stations, frontline clashes, paramilitary checkpoints, and the first civilian casualties.

Elezioni in Ucraina: l’arte difende lo spirito di Piazza Maidan

Donetsk, 2014.
By September, with Russia’s covert military intervention and the signing of the failed Minsk agreement, the conflict entered a new phase.Worked independently, relying on local networks. In a context dominated by propaganda and disinformation, my focus remained on ordinary lives, on the margins, and on the subtle signs history leaves behind before becoming official.
